Andrew King ’02

While at SHS, Andrew King ’02 participated in the marching, symphonic, and jazz bands, where he was principle saxophone. He was a four-year member of the golf team, earning two varsity letters and was voted All-NOL as a senior. He was also a member of the baseball team for four years, earning another varsity letter.

Additionally, he was an active participant in campus life as a member of the international club and the academic challenge team. He was a delegate to Buckeye Boys State where he was chosen to read the memorial of Don Thurman ’56 who was an Air Force pilot who died in uniform and later was a 2006 inductee into the SHS Hall of Distinction.

He was one of three students chosen to represent Shelby in the county-wide Young Leaders Institute.  Andy graduated 3rd in his class of 187.

After graduating he was accepted as one of 35 students into the Youngstown State University/NEOUCOM accelerated BS/MD program. He graduated Summa Cum Laude with a 4.0 GPA from Youngstown State in 2005. At YSU he received the President’s Scholarship, was inducted into the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, and the Clarence P. Gould Honor Society.

He was president of student council while at NEOUCOM for four years. Andy was inducted into the Gold Humanism Honor Society and Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. He graduated from medical school in 2009. Afterward, he completed an emergency medicine residency at Ohio State’s Wexner Medical Center.

Upon completing residency in 2012, he accepted a faculty position at Wake Forest University where he discovered his passion for medical education.

Returning to Ohio State, he served an Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine, the Associate Residency Program Director and the Medical Education Fellowship Director from 2013-2022. He was responsible for training hundreds of future emergency physicians and medical educators. He also completed a Master’s Degree in Biomedical Education from Ohio State.

Andy has held several national leadership positions within the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine and the Council of Residency Directors in Emergency Medicine (CORD). In 2016 he was named Faculty Teacher of the Year for Ohio State’s Department of Emergency Medicine.

Emergency medicine has always been his career calling. “In 1990, at age five, I witnessed my grandfather die suddenly from a myocardial infarction. After grieving, I made a promise to myself, that I would become a doctor to prevent other children from experiencing the pain I suffered. I enjoy caring for all people regardless of their ability to pay. I love the mystery of not knowing what is going to come through the door. I enjoy the camaraderie and resuscitating the critically ill.”
