Lessons in leadership came early – and continued

Dedicated to service and forged in leadership, Ian Clark ’88 has spent his life defending his country and uplifting his community.
His journey of leadership began at Shelby High School, where he was a multi-sport athlete in football, tennis, and track. Simultaneously he took on leadership as a Student Council member, Junior Achievement president, and Buckeye Boys State delegate.
At the University of Cincinnati, Ian balanced academics, student group leadership and military service. He earned a bachelor’s degree in international affairs while simultaneously serving in the Marine Corps Reserve and earning his commission as a Second Lieutenant. As a senior Ian was tapped into Sigma Sigma, a prestigious men’s upperclassmen fraternity for students who demonstrated exceptional leadership, service, and dedication to the university.
As a Marine Corps attack helicopter pilot, Ian’s prowess in the cockpit of a Super Cobra led to nine overseas deployments, including five combat tours. He flew a remarkable 435 combat missions across Kosovo, Iraq, and Afghanistan, ultimately rising to command both a helicopter squadron and an Air Station.
Alongside his tactical excellence, Ian prioritized his education, earning multiple master’s degrees and attending the prestigious Royal College of Defense Studies in London. His exceptional leadership and aerial expertise allowed a rapid ascent through the ranks, achieving the rank of Colonel in 2014 before retiring in 2022.
Today, Ian continues his mission of service in the civilian sector. He serves on the board of the Veterans Village of San Diego and on multiple commissions for the City of San Marcos. As the Director of Operations for Energy Systems Group, he modernizes military and veterans’ facilities through innovative renovation projects.
As a classmate observed, “Ian’s service to both country and community has meant a lifetime devoted to benefiting fellow Americans.”
